Like many volunteer railway organisations, most of the society’s members are aged at least 40 years or are retired. In April 2020, two existing members recognised the need to engage with people aged between 16 and 30, as a way to support the railway’s older members. This provides the railway an opportunity to develop a combined approach as part of the railway community, before they find partners, careers, and start families.

The Young Volunteers Group was formed to provide opportunities to learn and gain skills, and create a team mentality. This would also provide a good social base for younger volunteers who had already joined, and for those considering joining.

The group did not hold their first working bee until November 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Commencing with just four members, this number has now grown to 17, they have helped with restoration and maintenance of heritage locomotives, and reorganising storage facilities.
