The Bellarine Railway operates a small fleet of diesel locomotives.
We currently operate two ex Tasmanian Government Railways (TGR) X class Bo-Bo diesel electric locomotives in X3 & X20. These 660hp locomotives, built in 1951 by English Electric in the UK, are historically significant as they were the first class of mainline diesel locomotives used anywhere in Australia. We are very proud of these locomotives and they are predominantly used for charter trains and to supplement steam services during periods of steam locomotive maintenance or on days of Total Fire Ban.
We also have two ex TGR 0-6-0 V class locomotives in V8 and VA1. Both of these are diesel mechanical locomotives with Gardner engines. V8 has an 8 cylinder 8L3 motor with a 5 speed gear box and VA1 has a 6 cylinder 6L3 motor with a 4 speed gearbox.
We also have an ex Queensland Railways (QR) 880hp 1600 class diesel electric locomotive in No. 1604. This locomotive was the next generation diesel on from the TGR X class but has some commonality in parts. The unit is a Co-Co type wheel arrangement, and is perfectly suited to meet the railway’s needs.
In addition The Bellarine Railway has two ex TGR DP articulated railcars, Nos.28 & 29. These unique railcars feature three bogies for two carbodies per unit, and offer a very comfortable ride.
